Start Submitting To The PDX POP Comp!

Posted on February 3rd, 2010 by by Amy

We just received this and thought you all should know:

Dear friends, musicians and friends of musicians,

I’m writing to you all to encourage you to submit tracks to the 2010 PDX Pop Now! compilation. We are looking for submissions from all genres. Our overall goal is to create a compilation of music from local musicians that represents what is happening in Portland’s music scene this year. You can find our previous compilations on www.cdbaby.com.
The submission process is pretty easy. Musicians interested in submitting music for consideration for inclusion on the compilation can make a submission online through an mp3 upload at www.pdxpopnow.org. The submission form can be filled out online, though it will need to be printed, signed and mailed to PDX Pop Now! to complete the submission. Artists can still opt to mail in CDs of their music submissions if they prefer. See the top of the side bar on www.pdxpopnow.org for all of the details.

If you are not a musician yourself, please encourage your friends to submit. Feel free to forward this email to them, or direct them to our website.

Thanks for everything you do to support Portland’s music community!
Get those tracks in! Last year’s PDX Pop show and comp were incredible!

Ian MacKaye: You do know who WKE are, right?

Posted on January 19th, 2010 by by Amy

The Daily Swarm very cleverly pointed out here: Ian MacKaye Pimps Out For Nike’s Ad Agency that well-known diy punk rocker Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi) did an interview for Weiden and Kennedy, the mega ad agency that just happens to

represent Nike. It would appear that MacKaye believes that hating corporations is punk rock, but doing your homework before you give an interview is not.

What do you think?

I think I will save my copy of Steady Diet of Nothing from the burn pile this week. I mean come on, it just rocks so hard!

PDX? There’s an appropriate phone widget to use

Posted on January 18th, 2010 by by Amy

I’m scared of lawsuits. I think Steve Jobs could sue the pants right off of me without blinking. I digress.

XLR8TR and Scion have launched a very cool application for those of you with smart phones! It’s called City Guide and there it works for our fair city! Check it out and find the hipest restaurants and  the sweetest boutiques! If you don’t have it, you are so 2000 and late. Oh no, I’ve done it again. Sorry, Fergie.

Harrison Ford Actually Did Film A Movie In PDX

Or so we assume. The trailer for ‘Extraordinary Measures’ co-starring Brendan Fraser (not actually killing mummies) can be seen here:

See You In January!

Posted on December 14th, 2009 by by Amy

As the holidays descend upon us, we’ve realized that we haven’t done any of our holiday shopping, nor have we made any eggnog or cookies. This must change, so we will be taking a break until January!

As for the aforementioned holiday shopping, here are a few rock and roll ideas if you are as behind as we are:

New instruments!

Trade Up Music

I’ve said for the last five years that this is the year I will learn the guitar. Know someone like that? Call their bluff and get them a sweet piece o’ gear! Guitar? Sure! Drums? Only if the receiver doesn’t live in an apartment!

Music Lessons

School of Rock!

For the up-and- coming rock and roller you know who might also be in elementary, middle, or high school: rock lessons with Paul Green’s School of Rock! Who knows, maybe you’ve got a Hendrix or a Joplin on your hands!

5 Dollar CDs!

CD Baby

For the local music lover, CD Baby has quite a sale, and nothing stuffs a stocking quite like some sick tunes.

Indie Music Getaway!

SXSW!

Have a friend or loved one  that you like a little more than the rest? Take them to SXSW this year! It’s guaranteed to be a jam-packed line-up and Austin isn’t too bad either. Wait, take us!!!

Hopefully some of these ideas have inspired you.

Happy holidays!

See you in 2010!
